The Key Club or the Key Club International is a student led organization that encourages and develops leadership skills by helping others. It is the oldest and largest service program for high school students and is part of the Kiwanis International family of leadership programs. Kiwanis clubs sponsor most local Key Clubs throughout the United States.
Albert C. Olney, who was the California State Commissioner of Schools, and vocational education teacher, Frank C. Vincent, founded Key Club on May 7th, 1925. They partnered up to create the first Key Club at Sacramento High School in California.
Key Clubs run a number of activities to encourage student leadership and to open up the mind of students to things that are not necessarily a part of their world. Key Club runs study-abroad programs, provides vocational guidance, and gives college scholarship. The core values of Key Clubs are caring, character building, inclusiveness, and leadership.
Every year during the first week of November, Key Clubs all over the world celebrate Key Club Week. The month of November is known as Kiwanis Family Month. During the seven days of the first week of November, Key Clubs focus their efforts and ramp up their recruitment efforts. It is the largest recruitment week of the year for Key Club.
Ashley Zehnder is a member of Key Club. She joined her local Key Club as a high school student in Lexington, Ohio. She grew up in Ohio and spent most of her life there. She attended Kent State University and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 2012 and Masters degree in 2013. She currently lives in Houston, Texas with her fiancé and works as a server in the area.
